Need Winter Break Entertainment? Check Out 2017’s Fabulous Female-Directed Films

In the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal (not to mention the numerous other allegations of sexual assault and misconduct among Hollywood’s powerful), the call for more women in leadership roles in the film industry has gotten louder. There’s no time like the present to work toward greater representation, support and equality for women in Hollywood. Some groups have already taken steps to do so, like a rumored coalition with members such as Oprah Winfrey, Shonda Rhimes, Natalie Portman, Reese Witherspoon and others, as well as the Hollywood agency ICM, which recently pledged to reach 50-50 gender parity at the executive level by 2020.

While your average film buff might not have any influence on the hiring practices of studios and agencies, we can do our part, too. As fans, we can – and should – support and promote the work of female artists, loudly and proudly.

Take female directors, for example. In 2017, there has been no shortage of interesting female-helmed work, from Greta Gerwig’s critically-acclaimed coming-of-age story Lady Bird to Patty Jenkins’s box office-busting Wonder Woman to indie documentaries like Amanda Lipitz’s Step and Ceyda Torun’s Kedi. For a full list of fabulous options to watch over the winter holidays, check out Bust Magazine’s round up. Let’s lift up these hard-working, visionary women – and work for greater recognition and opportunity for female directors in years to come.
